A semblance of the heart shape we know today began showing up as early as the middle ages. It is unclear as to why the heart took on the particular shape, but various hypotheses exist including interpretations of parts of the female body, imitation of the shape of some types of animal hearts, and a more simplistic version of the two chambers and aorta of our own human hearts.

In fashion, this symbol has taken on a life of it's own as well. The brand Comme des Garcons uses this shape in it's logo and even the likes of Louis Vuitton has incorporated it into its designs.

What is the relationship between all of these things - the geographic shape, the human heart, and the symbol of love? A reminder that love is important, especially in these times, and that we should express our love and humanity today and every day.
