RUBY BRIDGES - A LITTLE GIRL WITH A BIG RESPONSIBILITY

This painting speaks to me in so many ways - without using words it manages to tell a story so prolific and transcending, even today. In the recent past, being black meant you couldn't even go to school, and desegregation of the schools seemed outrageous. Ruby was taught in a classroom all by herself, with one teacher because all of the students and teachers at her school refused to be in the same room as her.

During black history month, and all year long, it is important to remember that moments like this one are still happening this very day. Our daily news is filled with people being treated unfairly, and our justification for doing so. I suspect some day we will look back at these current injustices with just as much outrage as we now have for what happened to Ruby. Perhaps we could consider learning from our mistakes rather than being destined to repeat history?
